The Top 3 Gaming Genres for Gen Alpha
Gaming is the world where anyone can get involved and have fun, and Gen Alpha are fully embracing it. According to Beano Brain Omnibus, a whopping 62% of kids across the UK and US enjoy gaming, and the interest is only going to grow as new worlds and titles launch.
There are many reasons why kids enjoy gaming , but what kind of games are they playing?
Our Gaming, News, and Culture Review report has the answers.
Battle Royale
A particularly big theme for kids, Battle Royale is all about survival, competition, teamwork, and betrayal. Games like ‘Among Us’ and ‘Fall Guys’ tap into these themes and are incredibly popular. However, Battle Royale is very much Fortnite's domain. Kids love the virtually unlimited number of players they can interact with, as well as the gaming updates such as weapons, locations, and themes that keep the game fresh.
"I've seen a lot of content on TikTok about the new Fortnite season, it’s sick! It's getting so hyped up. I've also heard that they are bringing back OG Chapter 2 because the last OG chapter they got over 100 million people playing" – Theon, 10
Strategy
For competitive children, action-packed strategy games are very appealing. They enjoy solving problems and planning to achieve a long-term goal, by playing ‘Call of Duty’ or ‘Overwatch’.
Games like ‘Super Mario Bros’ or ‘Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Siege’ also allow Gen Alpha to lean into problem solving. This enables players to reach higher levels, giving them a real sense of achievement, whilst enjoying themes from Fantasy to Modern Warfare.
Tycoon
When it comes to adapting to the economy, Gen Alpha are probably the most successful generation to date. As seen in our Million Pound Kids research, a third of Gen Alpha kids have an entrepreneurial spirit, by selling items or saving pocket money for more important purchases.
This is also reflected in their gaming. With Tycoon games, they experience power dynamics, negotiations and challenges that come with business growth. Successful games in this genre, like Restaurant Tycoon and the endless array of games on Roblox are the ones that replicate real-life interactions.
"There are over a million games on Roblox so you can find one you really like then move onto a new one when you get bored." – Caylen, 12
"You can meet friends on there and you can friend request. There are millions of games on there." – Ella, 10
Gaming themes that tap into Gen Alpha’s characteristics will be highflyers with this generation of consumers. Gamification is on the rise with brands, especially within retail, where problem-solving games are used to unlock new deals, or personalise the experience. The possibilities are endless.
